I'm honestly not sure. A good understanding of harmonics would be an excellent baseline, but I'd guarantee the best in the business learned from trial and error.

Not like that, I mean if I were to have an engine on a bench, and shove a bunch of pipes on there, how each bend and increase/decrease in size would affect the sound.
